How to open IFC files online

You can read an IFC model without installing a BIM authoring application. IFCOK is a free browser viewer for exploring IFC geometry and the data attached to building elements.

Open an IFC file with IFCOK

1. Check the file format

Use an uncompressed .ifc STEP file exported as IFC2X3 or IFC4. The current reader accepts up to 64 MiB and 500,000 entities, with further limits on model complexity. A smaller file can still exceed a geometry limit.

IFCZIP, IFCXML, IFC4X3 and native authoring files such as Revit .rvt are not supported. If you received one of these, ask the model author for an IFC2X3 or IFC4 STEP export. Renaming a file extension does not convert its contents.

2. Open the model in your browser

Go to the IFC viewer, select Open IFC and choose the file from your device. The model is processed locally. There is no model upload or account creation step.

If you want to explore the controls first, select Try Duplex example. The example contains a building with several storeys and a range of element types.

3. Find a storey or building element

Use Fit view to see the model, or choose an isometric, top, front or right view. The model browser shows the spatial hierarchy. Expand a storey to find its elements, or search by name, IFC class or entity ID.

Storey and class filters help narrow the view. After selecting an element, use Frame to locate it, Isolate to focus on it or Hide to see behind it. Reset filters restores the visible model.

4. Inspect properties and relationships

Select an element in the model browser or 3D view. The inspector shows properties and quantities where they exist in the source. Its Relations and Source sections help you follow connected records. On a narrow screen, use the Model, 3D view and Properties tabs.

The reader can only show information included in the export. A missing property does not necessarily mean the original authoring model lacks it.

If the IFC file does not display as expected

Keep a local copy for later

Enable Save in this browser before opening the model to retain it on this device. Keep the resulting URL for restoration. Remove saved model deletes the stored copy, and Download source returns the original file without editing or converting it.
